Convert PDF to JPG on a Mac

Macs ship with Preview, which can export PDF pages as images, and every Mac has a browser that can do the same job with more control over pages and quality. This guide covers both routes and when to use each.

The browser route in Safari, Chrome or Firefox

This is the fastest option when you only want a few pages, and it keeps the document inside the browser tab rather than writing intermediate files to disk.

  1. 1Open the converter and add your PDF by dragging it onto the drop zone.
  2. 2Choose the pages you need — all pages, the first page only, or a typed range such as 1, 4-6.
  3. 3Set the quality. Use 150 DPI for screen and 300 DPI for print.
  4. 4Press Convert to JPG, then download each image or take the whole set as a ZIP.

The Preview route and its trade-offs

Preview can also export images: open the PDF, choose File › Export, and set the format to JPEG. It works without any third-party tool, but it exports the whole document with one quality setting, gives no page selection, and writes a folder of files to disk.

If you need exact control — a specific page range, a chosen DPI, or a single ZIP — the browser route is the better tool for the job.

Batch jobs and ZIP files on macOS

Safari unpacks archives automatically as you would expect, and so does Finder: double-click the ZIP to get a folder beside it. With several PDFs converted in one job, each document gets its own folder inside the archive, so nothing overwrites anything else.

Long jobs run in the background of the tab. Keep it open until the progress panel reports the page count you expect.

Where the files land

  • Downloads are saved to your Downloads folder unless Safari asks where to save.
  • Converted pages are named after the source document, with page numbers padded so they sort correctly in Finder.
  • Drag them into Photos, Notes, Keynote or a design app straight from Finder.
