Convert PDF to JPG on Chromebook

A Chromebook is built around the browser, which makes it the easiest kind of computer to turn a PDF into JPG images: nothing to install, no app store detour, no permissions to grant. Open the converter in Chrome, add your PDF, and the pages are rendered on the device itself.

Why a browser converter fits a Chromebook

ChromeOS does not run Windows .exe files or macOS installers, and almost every dedicated PDF to JPG program is built for one of those two platforms. A Chromebook can install Android apps from Google Play or run a Linux container, but both routes add an install, a permission prompt, and a second copy of your document inside another app.

A browser converter needs none of that. It is an ordinary web page: it opens in Chrome, renders with the engine downloaded alongside the page, and behaves identically on an Intel or ARM Chromebook. Nothing is installed, no extension asks to read your files, and the document never leaves the machine.

  • No .exe, no APK, no Linux container — just Chrome.
  • No extension, so nothing requests access to your downloads or file system.
  • Pages are rendered on the Chromebook itself, so your PDF is never uploaded.
  • Works on any Chromebook that still receives Chrome updates, including older models.

Convert the PDF in Chrome

The job runs inside the tab, so keep it open until the progress panel reaches the number of pages you selected. A long conversion can be cancelled at any point, and the pages finished before you stopped stay available to download.

  1. 1Open the converter and drag your PDF onto the drop zone, or press Choose PDF Files to browse for it.
  2. 2Pick the document in the ChromeOS file picker, which offers Files, Downloads and Google Drive.
  3. 3Every page is selected at first: click previews to include or exclude pages, or type a range such as 1, 3, 5-8.
  4. 4Choose 150 DPI for screen use or 300 DPI for printing, then press Convert to JPG.
  5. 5Download the images one at a time, or press Download all as ZIP for the whole document.

Where the converted files go

ChromeOS saves downloads to the local Downloads folder, and the Files app shows both that folder and any Google Drive account added to the Chromebook.

  • A single JPG goes to Downloads. Reach it from the download bubble in Chrome, or from Launcher › Files.
  • Double-click an image in Files to open it in the Gallery app, where it can be cropped, rotated or shared.
  • A multi-page job arrives as a ZIP. ChromeOS opens ZIP files in Files without extra software: select the archive, open it, and copy the pages out.
  • To keep the images in the cloud, drag them from Downloads onto Google Drive in the Files sidebar, or upload them at drive.google.com.
  • Press Ctrl+J to open the Chrome downloads page from anywhere, which is handy after the bubble has gone.
  • Local storage is small on many Chromebooks, so it is worth moving finished images into Google Drive and clearing Downloads now and then.

Password-protected PDFs

An encrypted PDF does not fail silently here. The document is listed with a Password required badge and the message "This PDF is password-protected. Enter its password to convert it." Type the password into the field on that row and the document opens for conversion.

The password is used once, inside the browser, to unlock the document for rendering. It is not sent anywhere and not stored, and it is dropped as soon as you close the tab or start over. A wrong password returns an inline error so you can retry, and a document whose password you do not know simply cannot be converted — the converter never guesses or bypasses it.

  • Encrypted files need their opening password, the same one a PDF reader asks for.
  • The password is checked on your device by the browser rendering engine.
  • Exported JPGs are plain images of the pages, so keep them wherever the original document is allowed to go.
